Why bother planning road trip games?
Planning games for a road trip goes well beyond just "killing time". It's a smart way to turn what could be a tedious or stressful journey into an enriching experience for the whole family.
For a start, it dramatically cuts down on screen time. In a world where electronic devices compete for our attention at every turn, traditional car games offer a welcome chance to disconnect and enjoy some genuine face-to-face interaction.
These games also spark creativity and imagination. Children, and not-so-young children, learn to observe their surroundings, think on their feet and work as a team. They help improve family communication too, as everyone joins in, laughs together and shares the experience. Laughter and fun are the best antidote to boredom and stress, creating a positive atmosphere that makes the whole journey far more enjoyable for everyone on board.
Finally, when passengers are entertained, the driver can focus more easily on the road, which makes for a safer trip overall. A calm, cheerful atmosphere in the car reduces distractions and helps everything go smoothly.
Classic car games that need no materials
These games are perfect because they require absolutely nothing, just a bit of imagination and the will to have a good time. They work at any point in the journey and suit all ages. The list below is just a small sample of the endless possibilities for fun on the road. Give them a try, and don't be afraid to come up with your own:
I spy
A timeless classic that never gets old. One person picks an object they can see from the car and says, "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with..." The others have to guess it by asking questions about its colour, shape or other features. It's a brilliant game for building observation skills and expanding vocabulary.
Word chains
This game puts mental agility and vocabulary to the test. One person says a word, and the next has to say another word that begins with the last syllable of the previous one. For example: "carpet" -> "petrol" -> "rolling" -> "lingerie". The possibilities are endless.
The colour game
This one is ideal at the start of a journey or after a stop to eat or stretch your legs. One person picks a colour and everyone else has to spot cars of that colour on the road. The first person to find a set number of cars, ten, for instance, wins. You can make it trickier by adding specific makes or vehicle types to the mix.
Games for children on road trips
Younger passengers need constant stimulation to stay entertained. These games are designed to hold their attention and turn the journey into an adventure. The key is adaptability: if one game isn't clicking, try another. Variety is the secret to keeping the fun going.
Who am I? (children's version)
Similar to the classic guessing game, but adapted to characters or animals that children will know. One person thinks of a character (from a fairy tale, a cartoon, an animal, etc.) and the others ask yes-or-no questions to figure out who it is. It's a fantastic game for developing logic and deductive thinking.
Spot the interesting number plate
A fun way to practise numbers and letters. Children have to find number plates that contain certain letters, numbers in ascending or descending order, or interesting combinations. Every plate is a new challenge.
Make up a story from what you see out the window
This game is a great boost for creativity and imagination. One person starts a story based on something they can see out of the window, for example, "Once upon a time there was a very tall tree...", and the next person continues it by adding something else they can spot outside. The story can get as wonderfully chaotic as everyone's imagination allows.
Games for adults and teenagers on the road
For older passengers, games can be a little more complex and challenging, but just as much fun. These aren't just ways to pass the time; they stimulate the mind and encourage interaction among everyone in the car. Don't stop at these suggestions, either. Adapt the rules, mix ideas together or invent your own challenges to make every trip feel unique.
20 questions
A classic that never goes out of style. One person thinks of an object, animal or person, and the others have 20 yes-or-no questions to figure out what or who it is. It's a game that encourages lateral thinking and strategy, and a natural evolution of the "Who am I?" format.
Story chains
Similar to word chains, but with sentences. One person starts a story with a line, and the next person adds another line that continues it, coherently or not so coherently. The fun is in the improvisation. The goal is to build a collaborative, surprising story together. Unlike the children's game above, where ideas come from what you can see outside, the inspiration here can come from absolutely anywhere.
Song with... (a word or theme game)
This one is perfect for music lovers. A letter or theme is chosen, for example, "songs about rain", and each person has to sing a snippet of a song that fits the brief. It's a fun way to revisit old favourites and discover new ones.

Stops that add up: how to make the most of them to keep the fun going
Stops along the way aren't just for refuelling or a bathroom break; they're golden opportunities to stretch your legs, recharge your energy and, of course, keep the games going. At Moeve, we know that every rest counts, and our service stations are designed to give you everything you need to make your breaks just as enjoyable as the journey itself.
Physical games at rest areas: jumping, racing, mini challenges
After a stretch of sitting, moving around is essential. Make the most of rest areas by organising small physical challenges: who can jump the highest, who can run fastest to the next tree, who can do the most press-ups? These mini challenges burn off energy and help wake up both body and mind before getting back on the road.
Picking up the game again after refuelling or grabbing snacks
Our shops at service stations, such as Moeve Market or Carrefour Express, are the perfect place to restock with healthy snacks and refreshing drinks to enjoy in the car. The key is keeping minds active and the fun alive.
Plan your stops in advance: stations with rest areas, shops or space to move around
To make your stops as useful as possible, we recommend planning them ahead of time. Use our Near You Station finder to locate the service stations that best suit your needs.
Tips for keeping the mood positive throughout the journey
Beyond the games themselves, maintaining a good atmosphere in the car is key to an enjoyable trip. Here are a few extra suggestions:
- Alternate games with music or quiet time: not everyone wants to play all the time. Respect the quieter moments, where everyone can enjoy some music, a podcast or simply watch the world go by.
- Let everyone have a say in what comes next: participation matters. Give each family member the chance to suggest a game or choose the next activity. It encourages a sense of togetherness and makes sure everyone feels included.
- Use the journey to chat or simply take in the scenery: sometimes the best moments happen naturally. Encourage conversation, sharing stories or just enjoying the landscape around you. You never know what ideas or memories might come out of it.
Ultimately, every kilometre on the road is a chance to build memories that last far longer than the trip itself. Leave the rush behind and rediscover the joy of good company, where shared laughter and collective imagination become the best fuel of all. Because in the end, what really matters isn't just where we end up, but how much we enjoy getting there together.
