How different toll types work in Portugal
Understanding the various toll systems for trucks and cars is essential for planning efficient routes and avoiding setbacks. In Portugal, you will mainly find two types. As a general rule, you will likely have access to both options at the same time, but let’s break it down:
Toll booths and manual payment
These are the traditional tolls with barriers where payment is made in cash or by credit/debit card. While increasingly rare, they still exist on some highways. Certain sections of the A1 (Lisbon–Porto) still use this system.
Barrier-free electronic tolls
These tolls use gantries that detect your vehicle and automatically charge the fee without requiring you to stop. This system is common on highways such as the A8 (Lisbon – Caldas da Rainha – Leiria), A17 (Marinha Grande – Figueira da Foz – Mira – Aveiro), and A27 (Viana do Castelo – Ponte de Lima).
Payment options for tolls in Portugal
To facilitate the transit of commercial vehicles, Portugal offers several electronic payment options, each with its own features:
EasyToll: registration and automatic payment
This is a straightforward option for foreign vehicles, ideal for short trips.
- You register your truck's licence plate and link a credit or debit card (Mastercard, Visa or Maestro) at Welcome Points at the border, through the EasyToll app or online. You will need your vehicle information, address, phone number and card details.
- Payment is automatic when passing through the gantries, with no need to stop. Valid for 30 days.
- There is a €0.74 registration fee and a €0.32 administrative fee per passage. It does not allow use of exclusive Via Verde lanes.
TollCard: prepaid toll card
This prepaid alternative helps you control expenses and is useful for longer stays.
- Purchase cards with different amounts (€5, €10, €20 or €40, plus a small €1.32 fee) at post offices, service stations, tourist offices and online.
- Link the card to your vehicle’s licence plate via text message (SMS) after purchase, and the amount will be automatically deducted. TollCards are valid for one year after activation.
Via Verde: electronic toll collection device
Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive and widely used system in Portugal, ideal for fleets and frequent drivers.
- It requires a device (On-Board Unit - OBU) on the windscreen that communicates with the gantries. The vehicle classification (height and number of axles) determines the toll amount.
- Payment is automatic on highways, in car parks and at some establishments. It is also compatible with the Spanish VIA-T electronic toll system, facilitating travel between both countries.
- It requires a monthly fee and transaction charges. For visitors, there is a “Via Verde Visitors” option that does not require an OBU.
The Moeve pro SAT electronic toll device is compatible with Portugal’s highways.
Tolls are managed by different concessionaires, making the billing system, which covers approximately 2,950 km, complex with several key aspects to keep in mind.
The PT Portugal service is always linked to the VIA-T Spain service, so it cannot be activated independently. However, it is possible to activate only the Spanish service.
To benefit from discounts on Portuguese tolls, you must request them directly from Via Verde. Required documents may vary depending on where and when the vehicle was registered.
Tips for saving time and money on tolls
To keep toll costs down and make your trip as efficient as possible, here is what you need to do:
Plan your route before you travel
Use tools such as Google Maps or Waze to calculate costs and travel times. Identify Moeve Service Stations near major toll points and located before the border to optimise stops for you and your fleet.
Reduce fuel consumption
Drive efficiently by maintaining a steady speed and avoiding sudden acceleration. This not only saves fuel but also reduces emissions.
Use electronic payment systems
Compare the different options (EasyToll, TollCard and Via Verde) and choose the one that best fits your routes and travel frequency. If you cross the border frequently, a system like Via Verde, compatible with the Spanish VIA-T electronic toll service, may be your best option.
Consider interoperability with other European systems for international trips and implement a fleet management system that integrates toll control for detailed expense analysis and route optimisation.
Manage toll invoices efficiently
- Centralise your billing: Choose a toll service provider that offers centralised electronic billing to simplify accounting management.
- Control expenses: Use consumption monitoring tools to identify patterns and optimise toll spending.
- Recover VAT: Learn about options for recovering VAT on Portuguese tolls.

Frequently asked questions about tolls in Portugal
In addition to covering the essentials for travelling with tolls in Portugal, certain common questions arise that most people do not know the answers to. Let’s take a look:
What should I do if I have not paid a toll?
If you pass through an electronic toll without a payment system set up, do not worry: you can still regularise the situation. It is important to understand that some of these highways were formerly known as SCUT (Sem Custo Para O Utilizador – No Cost to the User), but now operate with electronic tolls.
Consequences of non-payment may include fines. You can make the payment at service stations or designated offices.
How much do tolls cost to enter Portugal?
Costs vary depending on the route and vehicle type. The A1 (Lisbon–Porto) may cost around €25, and the A2 (Lisbon–Algarve) about €23. Use route simulators such as Brisa’s for accurate estimates. Keep in mind that tolls increased by 2.2% in 2025.
What documentation do I need to enter with my vehicle?
In addition to your ID and vehicle registration certificate, carry the Green Card (insurance certificate) and, if you are not the owner, an authorization letter.
When will tolls be eliminated in Portugal?
Although the elimination of tolls on some highways is under discussion, no confirmed dates exist. Stay informed through official sources.
In summary, Portugal’s toll system may seem complex at first, but with the right information and careful planning, you can optimize your routes, save time and money, and ensure the profitability of your transportation operations.
