What is the LDW system and how does it work?
The LDW system, or Lane Departure Warning, is an active safety system designed to alert the driver when the vehicle is about to unintentionally drift out of its lane. Its purpose is not to take control, but to warn you so you can correct your trajectory in time.
But how does the car know you're veering off course without meaning to? The magic lies in a combination of hardware and software:
- Cameras and sensors: Typically, a camera positioned at the top of the windscreen, near the rear-view mirror, continuously "reads" the lines marking the lane boundaries, whether solid or dashed.
- Control Unit (ECU): A small onboard computer processes the camera images in real time. It analyses the vehicle's position relative to the lane markings and calculates whether you are drifting too close to them.
- The warning: If the system detects that the car is touching or crossing a line and the corresponding indicator has not been activated, it interprets the manoeuvre as unintentional. At that point, it triggers an alert to catch your attention.
These warnings can take three forms, depending on the manufacturer and model:
- Auditory: A beep or a series of sounds.
- Visual: A warning light flashing on the instrument cluster or the Head-Up Display.
- Haptic: A vibration in the steering wheel or the driver's seat, simulating the rumble you would feel if you drove over road markings.
When is the LDW system most useful?
The primary function of the LDW is to counter the two leading causes of road accidents: distraction and drowsiness. It proves most valuable in situations such as:
- Long motorway journeys: The monotony of long drives can lead to fatigue and reduced concentration. The LDW keeps you alert.
- Night driving: With fewer visual reference points, it becomes easier to lose your bearings or fail to notice a gradual drift.
- Moments of distraction: Reaching for a bottle of water, changing the radio station, following a conversation... These are just seconds, but enough to drift out of your lane. Safe and efficient driving means minimising these distractions, and the LDW helps you stay aware of them.

Which vehicles include the LDW system?
Not long ago, LDW was a technology reserved for premium vehicles. Today, the picture has changed dramatically. Thanks to technological advances and European legislation, this system is becoming increasingly widespread.
In fact, the EU General Safety Regulation (GSR2) establishes that all newly type-approved vehicles from July 2022, and all new cars registered from July 2024 onwards, must include a package of mandatory ADAS systems, among them the LDW.
This means that the vast majority of new cars you will find at a dealership, regardless of brand or segment, now come with it as standard.
LDW system limitations
Like all technology, the LDW is not infallible and has certain limitations worth knowing about. Its effectiveness depends directly on the camera's ability to detect road markings.
Dependence on road lane markings
If lane markings are worn with age, obscured by dirt, or simply absent, as is the case on some secondary roads, the system will not be able to function.
Adverse weather conditions

Does the LDW system automatically correct the car's steering?
No. This is the key difference from other systems. The LDW only warns (Warning). The system that actively intervenes in the steering to keep the car centred in its lane is the LKA (Lane Keeping Assist). Both systems typically work in tandem: the LDW issues the alert and, if there is no response, the LKA steps in.
How does it complement other systems such as the LKA (Lane Keeping Assist)?
They make the perfect team. The LDW is the watchdog that sounds the alarm, while the LKA is the one that acts to prevent imminent danger, applying a gentle corrective torque to the steering wheel.
